A pre-wedding at the Palmaroga (where rain ruins nothing)

There's a question that comes up at every pre-wedding session: what if it rains?. At the Palmaroga that question doesn't exist.

A building from 1901

The Palmaroga stands on Calle Palma, between Montevideo and Ayolas, in the heart of Asunción's historic centre. The building dates from 1901 and, before it was a hotel, it housed the Supreme Court of Justice and the Municipal Palace. It was restored keeping the façade and the original floors, and today it works as a hotel.

All that history matters for one very concrete reason: the ceilings are enormous, the arches are vast, the mouldings are intact and the floors are the original mosaic tile.

It's a set you can't build. Either you have it or you don't.

The light doesn't depend on the sky

This is the real difference from the other places we recommend.

An outdoor pre-wedding lives off the last hour of sun: if the day is overcast, if it rains, or if you arrive late, it's gone. At the Palmaroga the light comes through three-metre windows and bounces off white walls. It's soft, even, and available at any hour.

That gives you two things no park can: you can pick whatever time suits you, and rain stops being a problem. If the day turns ugly, the session happens anyway.

White on white

The building is almost entirely white: walls, arches, columns, balustrades. That decides what clothing works best here, and it's simpler than you'd think: light, neutral tones. White, ecru, sand, beige. You blend into the place instead of fighting it.

And there's a bonus: all that white makes black and white work beautifully. The arches, the shadows in the corridors and the mouldings turn into pure geometry.

Three different places in one building

Without leaving the hotel, the session changes mood three times:

• The arched galleries. The most striking part. This is where we make the wide frames, with the two of you small and the building around you: you can see exactly where you are.
• The lobby. Warm light, lamps, mirrors and armchairs. The most intimate, relaxed moment, and the one that least resembles a photo shoot.
• The corridors. Dark, long, mosaic-tiled. This is where the most cinematic frames come from, almost always in black and white.

And if you want a fourth setting, it's outside: the historic centre, with its colonial façades, begins at the door.

What to know beforehand

It's a working hotel, not an events venue. That means a few things:

1. You need permission and coordination. You can't simply turn up and shoot.
2. A quiet hour is better. With fewer people around, the galleries are free.
3. You don't need to be a guest, but the terms do need agreeing in advance.
